Intentional individuation is a cognitive practice in compassion training where a person deliberately focuses on the unique, specific qualities of another individual to break down stereotypes and counteract the brain’s natural tendency to categorize them as a member of an out-group.
By consciously recognizing another person’s personal history, feelings, and shared human experiences—such as the desire for happiness or the experience of suffering—this process helps humanize those who might otherwise be viewed with indifference or bias.
Ultimately, this mental shift allows a practitioner to bridge the gap between “us” and “them,” making it psychologically easier to extend empathy and compassion to a wider circle of people.
