Calibration Training

Calibration training in HR is a formal process where managers and leadership align their performance evaluation standards to ensure that ratings are applied consistently and fairly across the entire organization. This training typically occurs during the performance review cycle, bringing supervisors together to discuss their proposed ratings before they are finalized and shared with employees. By comparing evaluations from different teams, the process aims to eliminate “rater bias”—such as the tendency for some managers to be overly lenient while others are exceptionally harsh—thereby creating a “common lens” or yardstick for success regardless of which department an employee belongs to.

The practical application of this training involves structured “calibration sessions” where participants review individual employee assessments against a standardized set of criteria. During these discussions, managers must provide evidence-based justifications for high or low scores, which helps identify outliers and ensures that a rating of “Exceeds Expectations” holds the same weight throughout the company.
