The self-serving bias refers to the pervasive tendency for individuals to attribute their positive outcomes and successes to internal factors such as personal ability or effort, while attributing negative outcomes and failures to external factors such as luck, task difficulty, or the actions of others. Austrian psychologist Fritz Heider first observed this pattern in his foundational work on how people resolve ambiguity: when faced with messy or ambiguous situations, individuals tend to bypass the objective truth in favor of instinctive explanations that present them in the most positive light. Social psychologists Miller and Ross formalized the concept in their 1975 analysis, showing that the bias operates as a motivated cognitive process rather than mere error: people selectively credit themselves for desirable results to enhance or maintain a positive self-view, while externalizing blame shields them from threats to self-worth.

Neuroscience research highlights how the brain naturally leans toward a self-serving bias to protect emotional well-being and conserve energy. Studies by Blackwood (2003) found that taking credit for success activates the dorsal striatum, the brain’s reward center. In contrast, taking responsibility for failure requires the medial prefrontal cortex, an area used for self-control and planning (a part of the brain that is more resource-expensive for the mind to engage). In other words, the dorsal striatum provides a neural payoff for maintaining a narrative of personal competence. By outsourcing the blame for negative events, the brain avoids the potentially paralyzing realization of its own limitations, thereby keeping the individual’s “drive to succeed” fully intact. In other words, the self-serving bias helps protect an internal locus of control for success, but creates an external locus of control for failure.

Krusemark (2008) supported this, showing that being objective takes more mental effort than being biased. This suggests the brain uses the self-serving bias as a “default” to save energy and stay positive.
